Best Noise-Cancelling Headphones 2026: 6 Pairs Tested on Flights

Airplane cabins are the hardest test for noise cancellation, so we took six flagship and budget pairs on 8,400 miles of economy travel between July and August 2026. We measured low-frequency attenuation with a microphone rig, recorded call samples in a noisy terminal, and drained each battery to zero. The $399 Sony won with the deepest quiet and 31 hours of real use.

How We Tested on Planes and Trains

We measured attenuation at 100 Hz, 500 Hz and 2 kHz using a calibrated microphone inside a sealed test box that mimics cabin rumble. Each pair then flew at least two long-haul legs in economy, where engine drone and crying children test different parts of the algorithm.

Battery life was measured at 70 dB playback with ANC on, not the manufacturer figure. We also scored comfort after four hours, earcup heat, case size, multipoint pairing and call quality in a busy terminal. Every pair was bought at retail, and prices were rechecked in September 2026.

How We Tested on Planes and Trains

Best Overall: Sony WH-1000XM6

The Sony WH-1000XM6 at $399 cut engine rumble by 32 dB, the best result in our box, and its adaptive mode stayed stable when the cabin noise shifted during descent. Battery ran 31 hours and 10 minutes with ANC on, close to the claimed 30.

Comfort held up on a nine-hour flight: 254 grams, soft pads and low clamping force. Call samples were clear in a terminal, and multipoint switching between a laptop and phone worked without a hitch. The case is bulky and the hinges feel less premium than the price suggests, but the quiet is worth it.

Best for Calls: Bose QuietComfort Ultra

The Bose QuietComfort Ultra at $429 is the better office headset. Its microphone rejected background chatter more cleanly than the Sony in our recordings, and the earcups stayed comfortable through a full workday. ANC depth reached 30 dB, a close second.

The immersive audio mode is a gimmick for most buyers, but the physical controls are excellent and the app is simple. Battery reached 24 hours, six fewer than Sony. If you spend more time on calls than on planes, pick Bose. For pure travel silence, Sony still wins.

The Sony WH-1000XM6 cut engine rumble by 32 dB and ran 31 hours with ANC on, the best combination we measured.

Best Budget: Soundcore Space One

At $99, the Soundcore Space One is the value surprise. It cut low rumble by 24 dB, kept 38 hours of battery and weighed 263 grams. For the price, that is remarkable. Calls were usable but picked up more room noise than the flagships.

Build quality is plastic and the app pushes notifications, which annoyed us. Still, on a two-hour flight it removed enough drone to sleep, and it folds into a small case. If you fly a few times a year and cannot justify $400, this is the pair to buy.

Also Tested: Apple, Sennheiser and JBL

Apple AirPods Max at $549 sounded excellent and integrated well with an iPhone, but the case is awkward and battery reached only 19 hours. Sennheiser Momentum 4 at $349 delivered 46 hours and a warm sound, yet ANC trailed the leaders by 4 dB. JBL Tour One M3 at $299 was comfortable with strong battery but struggled with wind noise on calls.

Each has a lane: Apple for iPhone households, Sennheiser for long-haul battery, JBL for a lower price with good comfort. None beat the Sony for silence or the Bose for calls. Background: how active noise cancellation works.
